The Socialists and Democrats Group in the European Parliament today welcomed the decision by the German governing coalition to introduce a 30% mandatory quota for women on the boards of the biggest listed companies from 2016.
S&D MEP Evelyn Regner commented:
"This is a significant step forward which could bring about a groundbreaking change – for all EU women
"We now expect the German government to keep up the momentum and break down the minority in the Council which is still blocking a similar piece of EU legislation adopted by the European Parliament in November 2013."
S&D Group spokesperson on women's and gender equality issues, Marie Arena MEP added:
"I am pleased with the decision taken by Germany. It has finally joined the group of EU countries – as France and Belgium already did – which are promoting greater numbers of women in the decision making of EU companies."
