LuxLeaks, SwissLeaks and the Panama Papers revealed a broken tax system where big corporations and rich individuals are getting away with exploiting legal loopholes, shopping around for the most favourable jurisdictions and hiding money in offshore tax-dumping locations. These dodgy practices are creating vast inequalities in our societies and draining the public purse.
We have been a driving force behind a number of investigative bodies in the European Parliament. We are proud that the new subcommittee on tax, which started its work in September 2020, will be both a watchdog and a people’s forum for tax justice.
Find out more about our tireless campaign for tax justice:
We will fight for tax fairness by making the financial bubble pay its fair share through a financial transaction tax (FTT) and making polluters pay through greening taxes.
We will combat tax evasion, avoidance and unfair competition by pushing for a minimum effective tax rate of 18% and by fighting for a reform of the EU list of tax havens and of EU policy on harmful tax practices, as well as tackling the challenges of fair taxes for a digital world.
We will make sure Europe’s tax system is ready for the future by exploring the move away from taxing labour and develop tax systems promoting gender equality and a fair approach to wealth taxation (including a European-wide property tax), and by fighting growing inequalities in income and wealth through progressive forms of taxation.
