The S&D Group co-ordinated the EP’s first resolution on Russia’s war of aggression. It was adopted during an extraordinary plenary session on 1 March 2023 with an overwhelming majority of 637 votes in favour.
The S&D Group drew attention to the humanitarian situation in Ukraine after Russia’s escalation of the war in October 2022 and after the destruction of the Kakhovka dam in June 2023. The S&Ds also put the economic and social consequences of the war affecting EU citizens and businesses on the agenda of the European Parliament.
The S&Ds called on the Commission and Council to establish a Child Support Package for assistance to Ukrainian children and teenagers fleeing the war. S&D members, together with the Committee of the Regions, have been garnering support for ‘Solidarity Holidays’ for Ukrainian children in EU cities and regions.
Finally, the S&D Group has been hosting several trainees from the Ukrainian movement SD Platform (Social Democratic Platform of Ukraine) since May 2022 and will continue to do so in the future as an investment into Ukraine’s new generation of progressive leaders.
S&Ds fully support Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognised borders. Therefore, we are in favour of EU support to Ukraine in all areas - humanitarian assistance, military assistance and economic and financial support as well as to help to establish accountability for Russia’s crime of aggression and war crimes. S&Ds also support Ukraine’s future as an EU member state.
